5 TIPS TO TAKE CONTROL AT UNIVERSITY

It's not uncommon to become routine bound or mentally stuck in a rut during your university years. However, as a result it can be a chore undoing yourself from this cycle and reclaiming control of your life.

This doesn't mean completely turning your life upside down and forcing yourself to create a new lifestyle, it's more about slowly introducing new healthier habits, one by one, until they stick.

Habits and lifestyles are very different. I once read that it takes 30 days to create a habit, but it takes 90 days to consolidate a lifestyle. In short, if you want to achieve this lifestyle without putting in the time and effort, it may work out for you- for a month. Then it's back to day 1.

Don't get me wrong, this is not to discourage you in any way, it's to advise you that it will take time and patience, but if you commit you will fully achieve your goals!

1. DON'T WAKE UP (TOO) LATE

Believe me, I am the first to say that sleeping in comes naturally at university. The late nights studying, partying or watching movies don't help, but they're fun so I won't touch on those.

I'm here to help you take control of your life, and sleeping through the afternoon is the first thing that must go.

If you aren't much of a morning person, try waking up at the same time every morning. Set your alarm for 11am for example. So long as you have a defined structure of your day, you're set.

2. CREATE A FUN ROUTINE

Routines can be hard to stick to, but having one that you actually enjoy and makes you feel good makes you forget you even have one. It osn't about creating a timetable where every minute is taken up by something, but something like: wake up around this time, do skin care, have lunch at this time, any extracurricular activities, etc. Something light, but something to follow, to give your days a little shape, allowing space for spontaneity of course!

3. KEEP A JOURNAL

Whether you write in it once a day or once a month, try and write down how you're feeling, what your thoughts are on certain situations, etc. It's good to get rid of this kind of energy, even if it is by writing it in a book noone else will see. It's also fun to read it years later!

4. SAY AFFIRMATIONS THROUGHOUT THE DAY

These little sentences hold more power than you think. Whenever you think about something you want for yourself, say it out loud (or in your head if you're in a public space) and change "I want" to "I will". For instance, I'd like to be successful and happy in the future, so in the morning and the afternoon, I say out loud: "I will be happy and I i¡will be successful". It's important to mean it, fully envision yourself.

5. SET (ACHIEVABLE) GOALS

Having a few goals in mind allows you to catwalk your way through your uni years, instead of just 'getting through' them. Try to create goals that last you your entire university course length, or when you achieve all of them, create new ones.

I hope these tips will be useful for you, and if you do decide to try them out, please let me know how you get on or if you have any suggestions!
